It's an 86 GL coupe, it's got somewhere near 200k miles. It's puking a lot of oil. Here's a couple of pictures.
We're thinking head gasket, but wanted to be sure. Chocolate milk never is a good sign in your engine.

Yeah that's what were thinking :/

Probably not worth fixing it up? It's got other issues too like steering pump and whatnot.

I mean the front rockers and rear suspension mounts... they ALL have rust on the trunk edge... Can your buddy afford to do it slow & himself so it's cheap, or does he need transportation? (p.s. if he wants to save it stop driving it NOW... the bearings and rings *MIGHT* still be Ok if you caught it soon enough..)

Front ones are covered in oil right now, the rear ones have some rust

EJ20 swap time

It's a head gasket unless your friend does nothing but drive a mile at a time or through deep water...

depends... 200K is getting up there, and those pre-EJ motors don't seem to last as long as the others.
on a happier note, I ordered a replacement engine for my 88 GL-10 (yeah, that the turbo one *awkward wink*) from Japan, had it delivered the my home in the US for under $500 (this was in 1997, so, grains of salt) and installed it in less than a day.
so, head gaskets on a boxer can be a pain without the engine out, and if you are doing steering that is is SUPER easy to fix with the engine out, I rebuilt my '94 impreza's rack with simple hand tools and bunch of 0-rings from the local hardware store.
so if the body is decent (you mentioned rust) I'd probably go the route of finding a cheap doner car with some body damage, steal its parts, and then scrap the remainders. Bet you can break almost even (not including the labor) if you can find a damaged car for cheap enough.

Yeah, it's just my friend is seriously thinkign of just selling it for parts at this point and getting something newer, more reliable. I think he can do the engine swap but I don't think he wants to keep pouring money into this car.

an equally logical choice, and far easier :D
